Romagna, 1840s. In a village the wedding of Barbara Montanari is about to be celebrated. The parish priest, Don Morini, who is also her uncle, is waiting for her in the churchyard. When everyone is ready to enter, Stefano Pelloni, known as Il Passatore, famous in the village for being a hothead, suddenly arrives. Barbara is in love with him, but her uncle has decided it is better for her to marry another man. Stefano, blinded by jealousy, kills his love rival after a scuffle. In the evening he visits Barbara, who declares to him that she has always been in love with him. At that moment the pastor returns. Stefano's gaze crosses with that of Don Morini, who asks him to repent for the crime he committed. Stefano goes into hiding. In a short time he sets up a gang of thugs that infest the villages between Faenza and Forli. One of his biggest heists he pulls off at the theater in Forlimpopoli, at the premiere of Dido Abandoned, when he robs those in attendance of as many as 10,000 scudi. Everyone fears him, except his parish priest, Don Morini, who goes to denounce him.But the Passatore ambushes and kills him. Barbara, his niece, vows revenge: she shocks the villagers and asks everyone to arm themselves. On the Passer there is a bounty of 3,000 shields. One of his own tries to betray him, but he is soon discovered by Stephen, who punishes him harshly, ordering him to cut off one of his hands. Stefano, rather than be captured by the military, would rather be killed by a childhood friend, Peppino. He goes to talk to him and makes him promise that he will have him kill him when he has had enough. Meanwhile, a new marshal, Borghi, has arrived in Forli and has decided to capture him at all costs. Stefano's gang is surrounded on the banks of the Lamone River: Barbara has also set out in search of Stefano, to kill him personally. Also on the trail of the Passer is the Monk, the former bandit whose hand he had cut off, who has now gone over to the other side. In an instant Barbara sees Stephen, but is unable to kill him, and the two make peace. But Barbara is accidentally shot by the Monk, who is immediately shot by the Passer. Barbara dies in Stefano's arms. For Stefano there is no longer any reason to go on living: the bandit goes to Peppino and asks him to keep his promise. The next day his body is taken on a cart through all the towns of Romagna.
